Discourse Communities

communication-skills-445846The National Communication Association or NCA is one of the most prominent discourse communities within the field of Communications. Furthering the careers of scholars and thus enabling others to explore the field of Communications, the NCA offers tremendous support for the academic pursuits of its members. The NCA actively strives to spread an understanding of communication to those outside the discipline by publishing academic journals, a tool for understanding to all.

The field of Communications applies to the masses. Thus, within this discipline, all communities can be considered discourse communities. Growing and changing within the maintainer’s of its existence, a mystical shape-shifter, communication takes many forms and is a reflection of its surroundings. Society sustains communication, and communication sustains life and interconnectedness for society. It can be claimed that just as human-to-human relationships are fostered through communication, through the different communicative roles an individual plays or through their use of communication, a relationship can also exist between humankind and communication conceptually. That being said, those who acknowledge this relationship with communication may also comprise a discourse community of their own in how they view communication and use it.
